 How Do Spammers Get Your Address? The first step in fighting spam is to understand how spammers get hold of your email address in the first place. Many spammers operate "bots": autonomous software robots that crawl the Web looking for email addresses. If you post your email address anywhere on a website (even on a discussion board or guestbook) then there's a high likelihood that, sooner or later, a 'bot will come across it and add it to its database of email addresses. These bot-harvested email addresses are often bundled by the millions onto CDs, which are in turn usually sold to potential spammers via spammed solicitations! NEVER post your main email address in plain form anywhere on the Web! What to do if Things go Wrong? If the above doesn't work, and you do get into trouble, call your ISP immediately and explain in a calm and polite manner (even if you want to rip the support person's head off and feed it to your dog) why your newsletter is not spam, and could you pretty please have your email account back.
